All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.
While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire-breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn't t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn't have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each other's nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds and mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever their grandmother in a leopard-print bikini.

There was a lot of action, but it still felt boring -- probably because I didn't feel connected to any of the characters. You're about to get bitten in half by a dragon? Ok cool. Your bones are popping all over the place? Ouch, I guess. The issue is that the characters seemed like caricatures. Celeste is the stereotypical YA heroine--pretty, unassuming, falls into perfection over the course of the book, etc. but everyone tries to act like she's just another girl or some crap. At the other end of the spectrum is Kendall, the stereotypical perfect, beautiful girl who can sing with woodland creatures, probably. Then there's Big Jock Bro I'm So Tough and Macho Stereotype. Lastly--and I'm glad he wasn't in the book too much because he put me to sleep--there's the love interest. In this case, a super stale love interest that had no chemistry whatsoever. I think the author realized this since he's apparently not in the rest of the series?

But I DID like the story and the plotline, so 3 stars for that. Overall, not the worst book I've ever read, but I don't see myself continuing the series.

The Conduit The Gryphon Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Stacey Rourke Joan DuKore Anchor Group Publishing Books Reviews
Celeste is a very normal girl with normal concerns and a totally abnormal destiny. Like a lot of ya books, the author goes out of her way to stress the normality. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good because the characters feel real. Bad because it goes on a little too long.
That being said I liked Celeste. Her internal monologue is an interesting mix of Buffy, katniss, and merry gentry. It works. There are some lines that I straight out adored.
Where the book fails is in the exposition. The middle drags complete with an obligatory training session and mystic destiny reveal. It could have been tighter and more spread out and I think it would have worked better.
However, the main story and characters make up for it. I'll likely check out the next book in this series and see if the potential continues
A solid four stars.
Review
This one took me a few stops and starts to get into, mostly because of the other types of books I had been reading before picking this one up. Genre hopping is all fun and games until you jump a little farther than you intended.
First impression
This is a fun light hearted read for a young YA audience. I am not in this target audience, but I enjoyed the story.
Celeste and her siblings are adjusting to moving in with their quirky grandmother, when a random encounter with a wooden figurine changes everything. The banter and style of writing reminded me a lot of Quinn Loftis Gray Wolves series.
What kept me reading (or didn’t).
As I mentioned, it took me a minute to get into the book, but once I did, I wanted to know what the siblings would ultimately be capable of. I wanted more of Celeste’s ‘emotional control’ abilities to be more in play, but maybe that comes out in later books.
Gabe and his playfulness made me smile more than once, and the teasing between the siblings was fun.
After taste.
It’s not really my style, but that doesn’t take away from the book.
Overall impression.
I would definitely recommend this book to younger YA readers and those who are looking for a light read with a bit of the supernatural.
"The Conduit" by Stacey Rourke is a creative re-telling of the classic good versus evil theme that is suitable for younger readers as well as the young at heart. This reader cannot recall any cursing, and sex is limited to a hint that someone might eventually hit "second base", or "boob-age" as Gabe refers to it. You have an eighteen year old clutzy, snarky female protagonist with Celeste; an older brother, Gabe, is the twenty year old endearing beefcake with vulnerabilities galore as well as the built-in need to protect his family; baby sister, fifteen year old Kendall is not only gorgeous, but artsy, sweet, and optimistic almost to a fault. As a dragon lover, this reader's only real complaint is when the big, bad dude morphs into a dragon intent to kill, but Celeste keeps her wit about her, delivering this gem, "I was stuck like a rogue popcorn kernel" after jumping into his mouth to defend her family, and the world.
There were some minor grammar, punctuation and spelling errors found, but not enough to toss a reader from Rourke's carefully crafted world. Spelling errors found were mis-used words, actually, like substituting "itches" when the writer surely meant "inches". All in all, this tale was decently edited; this reader is reasonably certain Rourke checked and double checked her work before publication and was happy to stay in the tale with Celeste, Gabe and Kendall. Oh! And Grams! This reader must mention the rascally grandmother that embarrasses her grandchildren with her out spokenness, her flirtatious behavior, and "take me as I am" clothing style... hmm, come to think of it, Grams sort of reminds this reader of herself. Although this reader does not own a leopard print bikini.
Rourke has a fun and engaging stylistic voice that draws a reader into the story quickly. The main characters are developed and flawed, making them not only believable, but endearing and easy to empathize with. The small town setting is easy to visualize, with the majestic Tennessee mountain backdrop. The backstory of the Gryphon and the reason for this war the teens are drawn into, was simply told by one that had actually been present during the war, their Spirit Guide, Alaina. Was this story perfect? No. But it was a darn good read that this reader heartedly recommends, and this reader will definitely keep her eyes on Stacey Rourke.
