LEFT AT THE GATE is an astounding collection of wonderful poems that show Verbica's versatiltiy in dealing with a variety of subjects and situations reflective of his life and his diverse education in English, Law, and a degree from MIT. His dedication to his wife and four daughters, "without whom I would be but a Sufi in a sandstorm," is as beautiful and arresting as the first and title poem "Left at the Gate." Verbica was raised on a cattle farm in Northern CA and has a particular strength in his poetry of commenting on relations between humans and animals in an unexpected but perceptive way that reflects larger lessons. The poetry is exciting and unfolds in different directions, often in the same poem, challenging the reader to interact and participate. The closing zeugma in "Left at the Gate" requires you to go back after the surprise and say "Did I get that right?" And you did. In the same vein "Maximilian" is the story of a dog (who you think is a person for the first part of the poem) who likes to eat cigarette butts and his owner who tries to break the dog of his habits. These poems are FUN and perceptive and wonderful. Some are vaguely autobiographical of this exciting poet who writes so well and so refreshingly. "Lion Fish" is the beautiful , wacky story of a relationship and a vacation, once again using an animal to illuminate an intense relationship between humans. You will enjoy LEFT AT THE GATE and return to it again and again. A superb book of poetry from a superb observer and writer of the human (an animal) condition. Left at the Gate and Other Poems Peter Coe Verbica 9780991153527 Books Reviews
"Left at the Gate" draws the senses into a smorgasbord of feelings, visions and flavors of life~that is a feast over and over again, fresh and anew each time I open the book. I find myself saying over and over again....oh, how did that poem come out with it's myriad unexpected metaphorical twists and turns. What a channel like Rumi was!
If only I could be as eloquent as the author, whose prose flows in so many directions it mandates multiple reads, each providing a fresh insight. Sometimes funny, always mindful, an occasional erotic hint, the words flow smooth and sometimes oblique, but always highly revealing.
I like to cold read these to my wife, who often asks for take 2.
There's quite a creative range of writing from 'Hard Won Cowboy Wisdom' to the poems herein, and I feel Peter Verbica has so much more to say.
Most definitely recommended, and highly worth the read.
This is the kind of collection you can pick up any time, return to any page, and enjoy the tale anew.
