If you enjoy tech with academic discussion of meaning of life, God, death and healthy doses of politics -- this is it. Oh, can't forget about 'murder, mystery' and solving it and the theories of workable space combat that they never got to implement. A very wordy, Cerebral type read with most of the action in dialogue or introspection.I read book 2, skipped 1 as a definite no, and read this one also. Thought the author would finally get into the actual conflict and assumed mere 'man' would win out, just didn't know how we would do it. Hence, spending my precious $ on a very, very, very boring read. Some very interesting ideas, plots but delivered like an eulogy at a funeral.
The part that I am most annoyed with is that I didn't really like any of the major characters. There were some minor ones I kinda liked but by n large, most of the folk were 'jerks'. Mad, complaining about promotions, how he-they deserved them and should have recognition. But they soldiered on and out cerebral'd the super humans again and again.
If my 17 year old son, who plays varsity football and boxes, would ever have the same whiney attitude as storied here, he'd be grounded for the next 10 years.

The Middle of Nowhere David Gerrold 9781932100105 Books Reviews
The only thing wrong with these novels is that they are too short.
David Gerrold, the writer of the quintessential time machine story, is now the writer of the best space opera series out there. In many ways these rival Enders Game in the well drawn characters and the examination of Tracey and game theory.
This is an excellent book!!
Pros - continuation of the Star Wolf series, something I wanted as soon as I finished Voyage.
Written by one of my favorite writers, my love of which began with "Trouble with Tribbles."
A screenwriter who wasn't afraid to stick a happy gay couple into an episode of Star Trek TNG back when being gay was a terrible stereotype instead of what we see now (most enlightened people, anyway) as much more than a choice.
Did I mention "Trouble with Tribbles"?
LTC Brik. Frakking awesome character.
Cons - the story didn't go the way I hoped. I wanted to see more Morthan annihilation, or at least humiliation, but instead I got chess with little more than a Morthan Annoyance.
The story spent a lot of time told from, instead of Korie's perspective, a new crewmember's. I didn't hate Gatineau (he reminds me of early Jonesy) but I didn't really like him, either. Though I thought the Left-handed Mobius Wrench and other initiations were awesome, I would rather have gotten further into Korie's head. Or maybe Tor's, or Brik's.
Overall, I still give it a four-star. I like Gerrold and think his books are definitely worth a read!
Emerging victorious from another David-eats-Goliath encounter with the Morthan Solidarity, the Star Wolf licks its wounds and makes its way home. The ship's unwelcome reception at Starbase is no surprise to readers of David Gerrold's preceding book, The Voyage of the Star Wolf. The cast of now-familiar characters are joined by some new faces as they and their not-quite-yet-captain Commander Korie struggle to rebuild the ship. They face enemies on all sides as they deal with Morthan sabotage, attempts by the fleet to break up their ship for spare parts, and an impending Morthan attack that no one else sees coming.
This book really should have been packaged with The Voyage of the Star Wolf as a single offering. Although it stands on its own reasonably well, it fixes some flaws in the previous book. In Middle of Nowhere we finally see into the minds and cabins of the Star Wolf's crew and gain some sense of their motivations and concerns. It would be better still if less of this perspective were sexual, and more richly emotional or intellectual. But the main characters at least achieve a second dimension to their personalities, a dimension lacking in the previous book. And Commander Korie's flashbacks build a more credible emotional link with his lost wife and sons.
If you are hooked on the Star Wolf and its Star Trek seen-through-a-glass-darkly universe, this book is for you. If David Gerrold's first book in the series fell a little flat, this sequel could still save it for you. After reading it, I was convinced to move the next book in the series, Blood and Fire, a little higher on my recreational reading list.
To me this book was not as good as the first one. There are bits and pieces of the book which are quite good which is why I gave it a 2 star (it’s ok) Goodreads rating. But the good bits are padded with so much nonsense that it it really drags the book down.
The thing that irked me the most is this totally idiotic idea that the captains of military starships seems to have to go around and barter for spare parts themselves. I do not understand how a writer can come up with such an idiotic idea. A pirate or some freelancer fleet yes but a military unit? No way!
The bit about the Star Wolf not getting credit for taking down the enemy ship in the previous book and instead continues to be punished by dumbass admirals is also not very fun read.
I wont even go into the lengthy and silly dialogs the Morthan crew member had with one of the humans about sex. Liberally sprinkling the book with uninteresting dialogues between various crew members was present in the previous book as well and making them about sex in this one was not an improvement.
It’s a shame because the good parts are quite okay. This is the 2nd book in a trilogy (I don’t count the prequel) so now when I have already read two thirds of it I will read the last one as well. I almost never quit once I’ve started on a series unless it’s really crappy. I just hope that the next one doesn’t continue to slide downwards.
