I read this book in a matter of days. The words tumble out like they are tumbling down a mountainside and propelling you forward, ever further into the cosmos. You don't know where you are being lead; you just strap yourself in and go along for the ride.Katzman has a unique writing style that produces an orgy of imagery. He offers no bulwark or safety net and you don't want one, because it's too conventional. To read A Greater Monster is to take a journey through a bizarre metamorphism, but all the while holding up a mirror, forcing us to take a look at ourselves and our environment. Although the novel has flavors of Alice In Wonderland and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to compare it, label it or name it, is to do it a great injustice. Like the bizzaro character Doghead says, "We've renounced names entirely."
A Greater Monster is definitely a Greater Read!

I stumbled upon A Greater Monster by chance and have never read anything quite like it. The author's use of prose contributes to an almost trance-like experience. The imagery is so surreal and vivid it felt like I was living in a dream among the bizarre characters. If you have an open mind and enjoy escapism, I would recommend A Greater Monster by David David Katzman.
I couldn't stay interested.
A book I can only describe as 'Fear and Loathing in the Wardrobe'. The perfect example of confusion to calmness and back again. It should be enjoyed in some sort of den; however, a bedroom or shared space should suffice. Five stars, but the kind you see after misjudging a low-hanging door frame.
2 words. bath salts. i don't ever plan to find out what it's like being on bath salts, but i would imagine it's not unlike reading A Greater Monster. at the risk of sounding pretentious, or even disingenuous, i won't bore you with a long-winded critique like i'm some reputable name in the literary world that my opinion should matter. that said, Davidx2 captures that WTF feeling without the prose falling apart into formless dissonance. at least, not unintentionally. it has its easter eggs, its quirks, its hidden alleys and fifth pockets. A Greater Monster is more than just a book. it's an experience--a transcendent one at best, poetic at worst. check it out.
David David Katzman's A Greater Monster is one of the most uniquely decadent novels I've read in a long while. Katzman's ability to weave together so many characters, settings and ideas all within the context of a larger story is just short of mind blowing. In addition to fine writing, the design of the book itself is brilliant - full of text shifts, fonts changes and amazing graphic illustrations. Reading it was like discovering a candy store down the rabbit hole.
I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to challenge themselves with something delicious and out of the ordinary.
When I finished A Greater Monster I had to sit for a while to process what I had just read. Maybe I should say attempt to process what I had just read. The author had taken me on such an unimaginable, otherworldly journey and I didn't know what to do once I returned. I am amazed by the brilliant mind of David David Katzman.
Fast readers take note you'll want to, NEED to go slow with this psychedelic experience. It's incredibly hard to call AGM a novel because it's so much more than that. It commands your time and deserves introspection. I found myself rereading so many different sections, deriving new meaning every time I did. You'll finish this book feeling as though your mind has been through an intense workout. It was one of the best feelings of mental stretching I've had in ages. Treat your mind to the gifted work that is A Greater Monster.
I was ready to like this novel. I deeply wanted to like this novel, but unfortunately I could not get through it. I made it about 50% of the way through the novel and decided to put it down to move on to other books that I wanted read. Potentially this could be chalked up to my lack of knowledge in Philosophy as many reviewed have said that it is necessary for this book, but I was not a fan.
